Biography

The Alberta Zirka Ukrainian Performers was founded in 1975. Over 450 dancers from Calmar and the surrounding communities of Leduc, Devon, Thorsby, Warburg, Beaumont, Millet, Drayton Valley and Edmonton have developed and performed their talents through the organization since its inception. Under the artistic direction of Dave Ganert, Zirka strives to create a fun and respectful Ukrainian dance environment that is inspirational, educational, and encourages a spirit of interest in Ukrainian dance and culture. Zirka offers a professional dance program that follows a syllabus of Ukrainian dance study beginning at age 3 to adult class.

Notes

Zirka performs, does educational outreach community programs for youth as well as demonstrations.

Biography

High Prairie Zirka Dancer club was started over 35 years ago. The dancers perform at their own zabavas and at festivals. Many of the original dancers are still active in the Ukrainian Cultural Society helping the dancers and parents and keeping cultural traditions alive.

Kvitka Red Deer Dance Club is a nonprofit organization maintaining and promoting Ukrainian culture through music and dance. They welcome dancers of all skill levels, ages 3 to adult, and Ukrainian heritage is not necessary.

Biography

Mitelka Folkloric Theatre offers a rounded dance program to all ages: classical, character, pop, creative, folk and international rhythms. It also creates its own stories through a unique blend of dance, drama and music. Recent productions include, “Ludo and the Star Horse”, “oh, My Canada”, “Swan Lake”, “Celtic Warrior” (Ireland), “A Grain of Rice” (China), “Abiyoyo” (Africa).

Notes

Carol has a Ukrainian Bilingual Folk Song Book available for sale as well as some children’s books based on the Ukrainian folk stories they have staged. Carol also has a complete script of the epic musical “Echo of the Steppes” ready for the professional theatre. This was staged in the Peace country in 2006.

Biography

Since 1989, our mandate has been to offer a high quality Ukrainian dance training program that provides dancers with a strong background in traditional and contemporary Ukrainian dance. This is achieved through curriculum-based training and stage performance experiences. We strive to create a fun yet educational Ukrainian dance environment with the highest priority placed upon developing the required skills of technique and performance. Shumka School instructors are among the most knowledgeable and experienced dance instructors in Canada.

We have 4 performances throughout the year: winter performance, spring performance, and two Ukrainian dance festivals. Performances and demonstrations available upon request.

Mission
Shumka exists to present, promote, preserve and develop Canadian-Ukrainian inspired dance as a leader in the performing arts community.

We translate this mission as:
• Expressing the human experience through the lens of Canadian-Ukrainian dance
• Sharing our love of this art form with our fellow citizens of the world
• Respecting the origins of traditional Ukrainian culture, while integrating the Canadian experience, and melding that with contemporary expectations in order to make it relevant to today’s audiences
• Creating a centre of excellence in dance education to prepare the next generation of citizens and Canadian dancers in the Ukrainian art form
• Collaborating with other arts groups in Edmonton, in Canada and internationally.

Shumka performs full length and customized productions. The company can offer lessons to various groups, and also operates the Shumka School of Dance.
Demos for “community engagement” events are possible.

The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association was established in 1979 by a group of dedicated community members who saw a need to keep the Ukrainian culture alive & well in their children. The success & continuance of our club for the past 31 years is due to such dedicated families & awesome community support. Our instructors provide the highest level of dance instruction to our students. We are very proud to provide group instruction to almost all ages and we welcome individuals of all skill levels to learn solos, duets, and group dances and be part of our family.

Veselka’s charm lies in its ‘living proof’ that individuals of all ages can learn and perform Ukrainian dance. With each performance, our dancers exhibit genuine pride and joy in demonstrating an appreciation for Ukrainian heritage.

Notes

Veselka is open to new dancers to join every September. All ages and abilities are welcome to attend weekly classes. Class often opens with barre work, followed by corner work, to establish and perfect skill and combinations. Finally, the majority of class time is dedicated to choreography as performances are often scheduled throughout the year. Veselka performs within the Edmonton area and beyond, with requests for performances flooding in yearly. Recently, Veselka has performed at the Clymont Zabava, DeepFreeze Festival, and celebrated their 30th Anniversary with a multicultural celebration event.

Over the group’s almost 20 year history, The Viter Ukrainian Dancers and Folk Choir have taken their place among the major performing ensembles of Canada by infusing the folk art of traditional Ukrainian dance and song with modern themes. Our vibrant presentations preserve traditional Ukrainian cultural elements while introducing a contemporary flair. Our group of choristers and musicians interact with the dancers, creating an entertaining and harmonious blend of storytelling.
